Farrari's Simrad 50 Trip Report

Well this will be a memorable one!

Our Race started early, as after looking at the tides and the likelihood of fog, we decided to camp at Izzy Bay on Friday night so we didn't have to try and rush out the Tamaki river at dead low tide in zero visibility.

Up at dawn Sat we were underway quickly, in the mirror smooth water, setting up as we went, getting to the start in plenty of time for a change.

We then proceeded to drift around, sizing up the opposition, and waving to our previous competitors in the smallboat division. The big boats left, then it was our turn, the first start had us well placed on stbd until just before the line when the AP went up, drat! The second start was not so great, but we were still about mid fleet, as we "roared" across the channel to join the big park up off North Head. The only good thing was that we didn't go right, -cause they looked like they were going backwards!

We managed to ease around North Head and opted to stay left out of the tide, and close to Short Circuit , who were playing some of my favourite Floyd tracks at the time. We were in really close and cannot have had more than 6'under our keel at times, but some boats were in even closer, and were going faster!!

We held left, tacking out only when we had to to give us water, until the tide changed, then we crossed the channel and were able to lay the tip of rangi. Finally we started to get something like breeze, and we started to move, and better than that we could see most of the other 1020's.

We knew that our sails were not in the best of shape, and we dropped slowly behind but still had some of the other 1020's in sight by the time we got to billy goat point. Then hoisting the kite we started to slowly make up a bit of ground, opting to sail gentle angles rather than straight off seemed to work for us, but there were a few boats being quite radical, not that it did them a lot of good, maybe gaining a boat length by the time we got to Motuihe green, when a nasty wind shift messed it all up, and we lost a bit of time sorting out our kite and getting going again, thank heavens it wasn't windy (HA).

We managed to keep our kite flying well around Motuihe, and did even better as we ran very shy towards passage, eventually catching Rainbow iv, who then proceeded to dogfight with us most effectively, we couldn't get past below, and whenever we tried to go over, they shut us out,a couple of phantom overtake and run away downwind manoeuvres didn't come off, and it wasn't until some others caught us up and Rainbow couldn't defend all of us, that we managed to break free. Thanks guys, probably the most exhilarating bit of sailing all day!

With the wind lightening again we carried the kite until we got to Passage, dowsed the Kite, and after a few nervous moments when we thought we'd cut it too fine, settled in for a long beat back. Unfortunately either our lack of experience, or our less than flash sails (Its easier on the dignity to blame the latter) saw us being slowly overtaken again, but by now it was dark and we couldn't see who was who. The only consolation was there were still lights behind us!

Just before Browns the wind softened again and knocked, so we were forced to put in a few tacks to get round, and then we were off towards Bean, picking a bunch of boats that looked like they had been parked up for a while. Then just as we were in sight of the finish we parked up ourselves!

For while we congratulated ourselves as we drifted past a number of the other 1020's, but somehow must have missed the zephyr they got because they still managed to finish an hour before we did! Finally after a frustrating time going slowly backwards (the GPS track makes sad if interesting viewing) we managed to catch our own zephyr and eased over the finish line, Tired and happy to finish the longest race we had sailed yet.

Give me gales and high seas anytime over these sorts of conditions!
